Dipankar Buddha is a deity of Mahayana Buddhism. He is the “Enlightened One” and one of the earliest of the many supposed predecessors of Gautama Buddha, who was born 25 years later. He is said to have come from Deepavati, a mythological city. At the moment of his birth, numerous bright lamps (Dipa) miraculously appeared, hence the name Dipankar.

Depicted here is Dipankara. He is considered the first to bring light (the teachings) to the world. The six Buddhas mentioned by Gautama are: Vipasyin, Sikhin, Vishvabhuja, Kra-kucchanda, Kanakamuni, and Kasya-pa.
