Buddha means the enlightened one. It is an honorary title given to people who have attained enlightenment through meditation. He helps overcome the anger that prevents us from attaining enlightenment and instead converts it into wisdom. His right hand shows the gesture of enlightenment, on the left he holds an alms bowl.

Buddha Sakyamuni, also known as Gautama Buddha, was the founder of Buddhism and lived in northeast India about 2,500 years ago. Born Prince Siddhartha, he grew up in a palace, protected from the harsh realities of life outside the palace. However, when he left the palace at a young age, he was confronted with the suffering and problems of human existence and began to find ways to avoid suffering.

He turned to various spiritual masters and philosophers, but found neither an answer to his question nor enlightenment. Eventually he decided to develop his own practice of contemplative thinking and meditation. He sat under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, India, and meditated until he achieved enlightenment. After his enlightenment, Buddha Shakyamuni spent the rest of his life spreading the Dharma or teachings of Buddhism. He taught how to overcome suffering and achieve enlightenment. He traveled throughout Northeast India meeting students and disciples to spread his teachings. His teachings were so influential that they quickly spread throughout India and other parts of Asia, eventually becoming one of the world’s largest religions. The teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni emphasize the Four Noble Truths, which describe suffering, its causes, overcoming suffering, and the path to overcoming suffering. His Holiness also emphasized the importance of the Noble Eightfold Path, which provides guidance on how to attain enlightenment through right vision, right thinking, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration. Overall, Shakyamuni Buddha was an important spiritual teacher and founder of Buddhism, whose teachings are still practiced by millions of people around the world.
